About the Foundation

Founded by collector Mrs. Simian Wang in 2010, the Simian Foundation has meticulously assembled a collection of over 300 pieces of modern and contemporary art. This diverse collection includes paintings, sculptures, photography, and design works, representing significant artistic movements and practices from around the world.

With a strong base in Hong Kong and Shanghai, the foundation is set to open a semi-public exhibition space in Shanghai’s vibrant Xuhui District. This new venue will serve as a dynamic platform for artistic dialogue, fostering cultural exchange between Chinese and international art communities.

The Simian Foundation’s collection features masterpieces by renowned artists such as René Magritte, David Hockney, Agnes Martin, Cecily Brown, and Julie Mehretu. It also highlights pivotal works by prominent Chinese contemporary artists, including Zeng Fanzhi, Zhang Enli, Zhang Xiaogang, Liu Ye, Jia Aili, and Liu Xiaodong.

In its commitment to supporting the global art scene, the foundation has sponsored significant exhibitions of its collected artists in prestigious institutions. Notable collaborations include Zeng Fanzhi’s exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and Yu Hong’s solo show at the Guggenheim Museum, held concurrently with the 2024 Venice Biennale. Mrs.Wang is also one of the sponsors of Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai.

The Simian Foundation’s forthcoming Shanghai space aims to host high-quality exhibitions that are both educational and impactful, enhancing public understanding and appreciation of contemporary art.
